Volunteering planting trees at Mount Kilimanjaro National Park Program

The melting glaciers on Kilimanjaro are known worldwide as an indicator of climate change. In Marangu Village, Be part of a farmer community on Kilimanjaro, learn about and contribute to climate protection!, which focuses on volunteering activities and contents related to climate change and climate protection. As a volunteer, you can get involved in various projects, learn how the local population is affected by climate change is what possible solutions are, and learn what you can do yourself to live in a more climate-friendly and self-sufficient way.

These seedlings are planted with the participation of our volunteers twice a year during the rainy seasons (March-June and October-December) as multi-day planting sessions at various locations within the Kilimanjaro region.

During the rainy season, there are also large tree planting activities in which you can participate, where tens of thousands of trees are planted. Every rainy season, Kilimanjaro National Park ! also buys a large amount of seedlings from the community group to compensate for the CO2 emmission of the air travel of our worldwide participants. During other months of the year, trees are also planted at places that have natural water resources, for example on public areas such as schools.

Why is your support needed?

We understand that the people living on the slopes of Kilimanjaro are not responsible for global climate change, but rather suffer from its effects. During your stay you will learn from them and our team members about the effects of the human-induced climate change and methods of sustainable living. We hope that you will spread the word about the knowledge you will acquire while joining the camp when you return home.

You can also make a positive contribution at the local level: Tropical rainforest covers the slopes of Kilimanjaro up to a height of about 2800 meters (9200 ft). The endless, dense greenery over the hills, slopes and valleys, often draped with clouds of fog, is impressive – however if you have a closer look you can easily notice that the forests are intensively used and trees are widely cut. Natural resources, such as forests and trees, are an important source of income for local people in the Kilimanjaro region. The sale of timber, the production of charcoal, and the agricultural use of former forest land are often the livelihoods for many village families. The lack of knowledge about the consequences of deforestation as well as a lack of alternatives to income generation lead to the continued deforestation of large forest areas and thus the loss of natural resources and the region’s unique biodiversity. Soil erosion and drought are serious direct local consequences. As a volunteer, you can get involved in reforestation activities and you can support environmental education activities, which provide the local population with skills about a sustainable use of the forests.

Kilimanjaro Reforestation and Conservation Outreach campaigns

You may also be able to take part in Kilimanjaro Reforestation and Conservation Outreach campaigns twice a week. Campaigns take place in local villages, delivering basic Kilimanjaro Reforestation and Conservation which is not often available. On the day, volunteers are transported to either a community group / Schools that has been organised to offer free support.  They are escorted and assisted by a registered Kilimanjaro National Park – Ecology Department and a local team staff member for translation purposes.

These campaigns are fully arranged and funded by volunteers, and you’re welcome to reach out to your Program Manager for more information about these.

Getting To Kilimanjaro

You book your flight to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). You’ll fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport. You’ll be volunteering in the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania.

Mount Kilimanjaro and the Serengeti National Park provide quintessential scenes of the African wilderness. And on this trip, you’ll be calling this incredible area home.  Surrounded by national parks and wide, open spaces, you’ll have the chance to spot the famous Big 5 animals of Africa.

Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest peak in Africa. With this mountain literally on your doorstep, will you accept the challenge to make it to the summit?

Or maybe you prefer to hit the coast and float around some paradise-like islands. Tanzania has a few and, this may be the best part, these island paradises are relatively unknown in the world of tourism (although there are a steady stream of tourists, which means there are facilities and infrastructure setup to help tourists have the best time).

Besides the incredible landscapes filled with wild animals, the many different cultures in Tanzania are diverse and interesting. You can expect very friendly people stopping you in the street for a casual chat before sending you on your way. If you’re curious about the laid back lifestyle and friendly people of East Africa, Tanzania is a great place to start.

About the Accommodation

We provide safe, clean and comfortable accommodation, comfortable bedding, excellent breakfast and dinner and housekeeping. This will be a quiet and friendly neighbourhood only 15 minutes from the main hustle and bustle of town. You will have 24 hour gated security, a domestic/cook (who will happily do your laundry for a small fee) and a coordinator who will ensure you settle in quickly and comfortably into your new town. This is a shared home where you will be staying with other volunteers and guests from across the world, so you will never be on your own in your new environment. The house is impeccably clean, well kept, modern and spacious.

How will you get around?

For your placement, you will travel like a local and walk or take public transport. You will need to set a small budget aside for this (around $1 per day by local minibuses, 4 to 5 days per week). It is important you are prepared and comfortable to travel around town, this is a demanding role that requires dedication.
