Best Months to Climb Kilimanjaro — Deep Dive
The best months to climb Mount Kilimanjaro are January through March and June through October. These periods correspond with Tanzania’s dry seasons, offering the most stable weather, clear panoramic views, and the highest rates of summit success.
Expert Insight: “If you have flexibility, go in January or September. Those two windows give you the best combination of weather, success rate, and scenery. If you’re locked into a specific date, pick the route that matches the season. Rongai in March. Any route in June–October. Avoid April, May, November, and early December like the plague.” — Senior Guide, 18 years experience
#1: January – February (The Absolute Best)
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Rating | Superb |
| Temperature (Summit) | -10°C to -15°C (manageable) |
| Temperature (Base) | 20–25°C (warm & pleasant) |
| Rainfall | Low — occasional afternoon showers |
| Cloud Cover | Minimal — clear summit views |
| Visitor Traffic | Medium — post-holiday lull |
| Success Rate | 85–95% (highest of the year) |
| Best Routes | All routes — Lemosho, Machame, Northern Circuit |
Why It’s #1: After the December holiday rush, the mountain empties out. The weather is at its most stable. The skies are clear. The temperatures are warm at the base and cold but manageable at the summit. This is when experienced guides schedule their best trips.
#2: June – July (The Early Dry Season)
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Rating | Good |
| Temperature (Summit) | -15°C to -25°C (cold) |
| Temperature (Base) | 15–20°C (cool) |
| Rainfall | Very low |
| Cloud Cover | Low to moderate |
| Visitor Traffic | Medium — start of high season |
| Success Rate | 80–90% |
| Best Routes | Rongai (early season), Machame, Lemosho |
Note: June is the START of the dry season. Early June can still have some cloud. Late June through July is excellent. The summit is colder than January, so pack accordingly.
#3: August – September (The Peak Dry Season)
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Rating | Very Good |
| Temperature (Summit) | -15°C to -25°C (very cold) |
| Temperature (Base) | 15–22°C (cool) |
| Rainfall | Almost zero |
| Cloud Cover | Minimal — crystal clear |
| Visitor Traffic | High — peak season |
| Success Rate | 85–95% |
| Best Routes | All routes — especially Northern Circuit |
Why It’s #3 (tied for #1): August and September are the clearest months on the mountain. The skies are so clear you can see the Indian Ocean from the summit. The only downside: more crowds. If you don’t mind sharing the trail, this is arguably the BEST weather window.
Expert Insight: “September is my personal favorite. The skies are blue, the air is thin and crisp, and the Furtwängler Glacier is at its most visible. Plus, the post-summer crowds thin out after mid-September. If you can go September 1–15, do it.” — Expedition Leader, 200+ summits
#4: March (The Transition Month)
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Rating | ☆☆ Variable |
| Temperature (Summit) | -10°C to -20°C |
| Temperature (Base) | 20–25°C |
| Rainfall | Increasing — afternoon thunderstorms common |
| Cloud Cover | Moderate to high |
| Visitor Traffic | Low |
| Success Rate | 75–80% |
| Best Routes | ✅ Rongai Route only |
The Risk: March is the transition from wet to dry season. You can get beautiful days AND heavy rainstorms in the same week. Only climb in March if you’re flexible and can handle variable weather. Rongai is the safest route this month because it approaches from the north, where rain is less frequent.
#5: April – May (The Rainy Season — AVOID)
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Rating | ☆☆☆☆ Difficult & Dangerous |
| Temperature (Summit) | -5°C to -15°C |
| Temperature (Base) | 20–28°C (hot & humid) |
| Rainfall | Very high — daily downpours |
| Cloud Cover | Heavy — summit often invisible |
| Visitor Traffic | Very Low |
| Success Rate | 50–65% |
| Best Routes | All routes tough |
Do Not Climb in April–May: This is the long rainy season on Kilimanjaro. Trails become mudslides. Visibility drops to zero. Altitude sickness rates spike because cold + wet + wind = dangerous. Summit success rates plummet. Save your money. Wait for June.
#6: October (The Closing Window)
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Rating | ☆☆ Variable |
| Temperature (Summit) | -10°C to -20°C |
| Temperature (Base) | 20–25°C |
| Rainfall | Increasing — short rains begin |
| Cloud Cover | Moderate |
| Visitor Traffic | Medium |
| Success Rate | 80–85% |
| Best Routes | ✅ Rongai Route recommended |
Early October (1–15 Oct): Still excellent. Late October (16–31 Oct): Weather starts turning. Rain becomes more frequent. If you can climb in early October, go. If you’re looking at late October, pick Rongai.
#7: November – December (The Short Rains — AVOID)
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Rating | ☆☆☆☆ Difficult & Dangerous |
| Temperature (Summit) | -5°C to -15°C |
| Temperature (Base) | 20–28°C |
| Rainfall | High — daily rain + snow at summit |
| Cloud Cover | Heavy |
| Visitor Traffic | Low (except Dec holidays) |
| Success Rate | 50–65% |
| Best Routes | All routes tough |
November: The short rains. Daily downpours. Muddy trails. Low visibility. Avoid.
December: The first two weeks (1–15 Dec) are the short rains — avoid. The last two weeks (16–31 Dec) are the holiday season — extremely crowded and expensive. If you MUST climb in December, pick Rongai and go early (16–20 Dec).
