Climbing Kilimanjaro in August is considered one of the best times to do so, as it falls within the “long dry season” with mostly clear skies, minimal rain, and pleasant temperatures, making it a popular choice for most climbers; however, expect larger crowds due to it being peak season, especially during the European and American summer holidays.
Dry Season: August is part of the long dry season (June to mid-October), characterized by minimal rainfall and clear skies. This makes for excellent visibility and stunning views.
Temperature:
Low Alpine Zone: Daytime temperatures range from 5–10°C (40–50°F).
High Alpine Zone: Temperatures hover around freezing (0°C / 32°F) at 5,000 meters.
Summit: Temperatures can drop to around -6°C (21°F) during the day and plummet to -20°C (-4°F) at night. With wind chill, it can feel as cold as -30°C (-22°F).
Peak Season: August is one of the busiest months on Mount Kilimanjaro, alongside July, due to summer vacations in Europe and North America.
Popular Routes: The Marangu and Machame routes are particularly crowded during this time.
Machame Route: Known for its scenic beauty and good acclimatization profile, it’s a favorite among climbers.
Lemosho Route: Offers stunning panoramic views and is less crowded, with excellent acclimatization opportunities.
Marangu Route: The most popular and well-established route, often referred to as the “Coca-Cola” route. It features hut accommodations but tends to be more crowded.
